What is a Common Data Environment (CDE)?

A Common Data Environment provides an agreed source for plans, models, specifications, reports, correspondence and other project information. It helps participants work with the correct version instead of exchanging uncontrolled file copies.

What does a CDE support?

• defined folders, naming rules and access rights;
• version history and clear status such as work in progress, shared or approved;
• review and approval workflows;
• traceable changes, comments and responsibilities;
• secure exchange between organisations.

A CDE improves collaboration only when the project defines who may upload, check, approve and use information. Access security, backups and retention rules are also essential.

In a BIM process, the CDE is the managed environment for models and their supporting documents.
